Surgical Correction of the Ageing Neck

There are many factors that give rise to an unsatisfactory appearance of the neck. As we get older the skin of the neck becomes more lax, the edges of the underlying muscle tend to part causing 'platysma bands', and more fat gets deposited in the neck. These factors give rise to a heavy appearance of the neck and loss of the angle between the chin and the neck. Although these changes are more pronounced with ageing, weight gain can aggravate the situation at any age. In addition, some people simply have an undesirable appearance of the neck due to hereditary or genetic factors.

There are numerous approaches to improving the neck. Beginning with the simplest, Botulinum Toxin can be injected into the platysma bands. The results can be very pleasing but the effect of Botulinum Toxin is temporary (approx three months) and therefore may need repeating. Removing fat from the neck by liposuction or excision is possible and can be performed under local anaesthesia. It may also be performed in conjunction with other procedures eg a facelift, when general anaesthesia is usually employed.

The treatment option most appropriate to your needs will be discussed at your consultation. Whether the surgical procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia there is usually some bruising that lasts for anything up to two weeks. Arnica tablets taken before and after treatment can reduce this bruising.

Every attempt is made to achieve the desired result but as with all cosmetic procedures, the results cannot be guaranteed.
